Gathering 8: Encountering the Risen Jesus

Zoom Recording

  • Please read chapter 21.1-19 of St. John's Gospel.

Here are some questions to discuss as a family:

  1. Was this the first time that Peter went fishing? ...that Jesus helped him to catch fish?

  2. What do you think the apostles were thinking as they ate breakfast with the risen Jesus?  What questions do you think they asked him?

  3. Why did Jesus ask Peter 3 TIMES if Peter loved him? (remember the Passion narrative from Good Friday?  Peter was asked 3 TIMES if he was a disciple of Jesus...)  Have you ever betrayed someone you love?  Did that person forgive you?

  4. Jesus tells Peter to "feed his sheep".  Who are the sheep/lambs?  What does this mean?

  5. Jesus tells Peter to "follow him".  What does that mean?  How can we follow Jesus today?

Tasks & Activities

  • Revisit the Easter story with your children and tell them that Easter is 50 days long. A huge celebration, often referred to as the Long Sunday. During these 50 days we see Jesus appear to the disciples and the women and instructs them on carrying out His mission.

  • Talk about how we can continue to carry out His mission  in our lives. A few hints would be attending online or in person masses, always revisiting the Law of Love ( love thy God with all your heart, soul and mind, love your neighbour as yourself), looking at the prayers and getting your children to know them (if you haven’t already), the Hail Mary, Glory Be, and the Our Father.

  • Do something special each Sunday of Easter. This will mark the significance of this special time for us as a people of Jesus Christ, a people of Hope

Easter Tombs:

While making these Easter tombs you can talk about the Easter Story.  All you need is a small amount  of grass seed, some potting soil , some stones, a few twigs and an old garden pot. It is fun to watch the grass grow and have your child water it everyday. This will remind them of the Resurrection and the 50 Days of Easter, each time they water the grass seed.(you can use wheat grass also, apparently it grows faster). A quick trip to the Dollar store and you can get all the required supplies.

There are many great activities to do with your kids to celebrate the 50 days of Easter. Here is a link to give you some ideas.
